Cool kid

April 3rd, 2008 | by Paul |

A lot of the “consumerist” and “anticonsumerist” news comes down to big things. New movies, mass trends or just op-ed writers pleading for people to stop buying so damn much.

The little stuff gets sort of lost. Little stuff like a 16-year-old Australian girl named Marnie Edmiston who has an anticonsumerist art piece in the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane.

Check out this article from the Bundaberg NewsMail. I can’t find any pictures of the piece itself, but I’ll keep looking.

Just a kid from Queensland who took it upon herself to make a statement. Just a little blurb in her local paper. Just someone who incorporated this stuff into her life, even at 16. Very cool. And I like the name “Marnie,” too.

On another topic, my thanks to all who have shared their thoughts with me during the recent family issues. For those of you who don’t know, my Uncle Bill died following an accident. He was one of the best.

The family has requested that memorials in his name (William Lappe) go to either St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colona, IL, or the Colona Fire Department.

For those of you who pray, please keep my Aunt Mary, my cousins Richard and Jonna and their families in your prayers. For those of you who don’t pray, please keep them in your thoughts.

Marnie is the awesomest, shame you don’t have a picture.

Redgarding the art piece, I am believed to reason that the anticonsumerist movement portrayed in this contemporary piece of artistic literature is relevant to the evergrowing realisation of the increasing need for consumerism in today’s society. If these people, such as Marnie, can obtain the necessary education to disregard those who oppose the revolutionary movement, then the face of marketing can be overpowered by the majority of working-class citizens, many of which have been oppressed by gargantuan, megalomaniacal techniques.

And I like the name Marnie as well.
    Love your work.
